Things to Do in Oudtshoorn from The Featherbed

Staying on Langenhoven Street puts you in the centre of Oudtshoorn, with the Klein Karoo’s best-known attractions a short drive from your door.

Cango Caves

The Cango Caves lie about 30 km north of town on the R328, roughly a 25-minute drive from The Featherbed. Guided tours lead you through the limestone chambers at the foot of the Swartberg mountains. It is worth booking ahead during school holidays.

Cango Wildlife Ranch

Only about 5 km away, the Cango Wildlife Ranch is an easy morning or afternoon outing for families, with cheetahs, crocodiles and many other animals to see up close.

Ostrich farms

Oudtshoorn is known as the ostrich capital of the world. Working show farms such as Safari Ostrich Farm offer guided tours that tell the story of the feather boom that built the town.

Meerkat encounters

Early risers can join a sunrise meerkat tour, such as Meerkat Magic, to watch wild meerkats emerge from their burrows as the Karoo warms up.

CP Nel Museum

In the town centre, the CP Nel Museum is housed in a historic sandstone school building and covers the history of Oudtshoorn and the ostrich feather industry.

Swartberg Pass and the mountains

The start of the historic Swartberg Pass is about 40 km from The Featherbed. The gravel pass crosses the Swartberg mountains towards Prince Albert and makes an unforgettable day trip.

Route 62, restaurants and shops

Langenhoven Street forms part of the Route 62 network through town, so The Featherbed is an easy stopover on a Klein Karoo road trip. Restaurants serving Karoo lamb and ostrich, as well as shops and supermarkets, are close by.

Festivals and events

Oudtshoorn hosts the Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees (KKNK) arts festival each year, along with school sports tours and other events. Accommodation fills up early over these periods, so book well in advance.
